Overview
Sexual behaviour refers to the range of activities, practices, and patterns through which human sexuality is expressed, encompassing partnered and solitary activity, the formation of intimate relationships, and reproductive behaviour. It is shaped by an interplay of biological, psychological, developmental, social, and cultural factors, and is studied across the lifespan from adolescence onward. In public health, sexual behaviour is examined principally for its links to sexually transmitted infections including HIV, to reproductive health, and to risk and protective practices such as condom use, partner numbers, and uptake of prevention strategies. Constructs such as sexual sensation-seeking, compulsivity, and pleasure, together with knowledge, attitudes, communication, and access to services, help explain variation in risk behaviour and inform interventions. Adolescent sexual and reproductive health, parent-child communication, and the needs of vulnerable and key populations are recurring concerns. Research published in this area by the journal addresses these themes, including the influence of sexual sensation-seeking, compulsivity, and pleasure on condom use among youth, sexual risk behaviours and HIV prevention among sex workers, adherence to pre-exposure prophylaxis, gender differences in sexual functioning among adolescents with Down syndrome, partner violence and condom use in serodiscordant couples, and parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive health across several countries. These contributions span behavioural epidemiology, HIV and STI prevention, and adolescent reproductive health.
