Overview
Methanol, also called methyl Alcohol, is the simplest Alcohol, a light, colorless, volatile, and flammable liquid with the chemical formula CH3OH. It is widely used as an industrial solvent, a chemical feedstock for producing formaldehyde, acetic acid, and other compounds, and a fuel and fuel additive. Methanol occurs naturally in small amounts and can be produced industrially, historically from wood and now chiefly from natural gas as well as from renewable biomass sources. Despite its broad utility, methanol is toxic to humans if ingested, inhaled, or absorbed, and its metabolism produces harmful byproducts, which is an important consideration in its handling and use. In the laboratory, methanol is a common extraction and analytical solvent used to isolate and study chemical constituents of natural and synthetic materials. Within the broad scope of research on alcohols and their chemistry, methanol is significant both for its industrial applications and for its biological and toxicological properties. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to alcohols and related chemistry, offering researchers and students freely accessible scientific work across the field.
