Overview
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a type of acquired brain injury that occurs when an external force, such as a direct blow or an acceleration-deceleration force, disrupts brain function, with effects ranging from mild concussion to coma or death. TBI is a major cause of death and disability worldwide and can produce long-term cognitive, psychological, and physical impairments that interfere with daily functioning. An area of particular research interest is the relationship between head injury and later neurodegeneration: TBI is regarded as a risk factor for cognitive decline and dementia, including Alzheimer's disease, and shared mechanisms such as neuroinflammation, oxidative stress, and disrupted brain networks are studied to understand this link. Symptoms depend on the severity and location of injury and may include headache, confusion, memory and concentration difficulties, and behavioural changes. Management spans acute neurosurgical care, prediction of outcome, neuroprotection, and long-term rehabilitation with monitoring for cognitive sequelae. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research relevant to dementia and brain health reflecting these themes, including studies on outcomes and prognostic factors of TBI in pediatric and adult patients, neurosurgical management of extradural hematoma, prediction of discharge disposition after traumatic injury, neuroprotection against oxidative injury in astrocytes, and dynamic network analysis of functional connectivity in dementia.
