Overview

Reactive nitrogen species (RNS) are a group of chemically reactive molecules derived from nitric oxide that contain nitrogen, often in combination with oxygen. Key members include nitric oxide, peroxynitrite, and nitrogen dioxide. RNS are produced naturally in the body and play important physiological roles in cell signalling, regulation of blood vessel tone, and immune defence, where they help neutralise invading pathogens. However, when their production exceeds the body's protective capacity, RNS contribute to nitrosative and oxidative stress, damaging proteins, lipids, and DNA. This imbalance is implicated in inflammation and in the development of various diseases, which is why RNS are studied alongside reactive oxygen species in the broader context of oxidative stress and antioxidant defence. Antioxidants and radical-scavenging compounds can help counter the harmful effects of RNS by neutralising reactive intermediates and limiting cellular damage. Research relevant to this topic examines the radical-scavenging and antioxidant activities of natural and synthetic compounds, the role of antioxidant micronutrients in metabolic conditions, and the generation of reactive intermediates during oxidative reactions in cells. This page brings together peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to reactive nitrogen species, oxidative stress, and Antioxidant Activity.
