Overview

Knee osteoarthritis is a chronic, degenerative form of arthritis involving the progressive breakdown of joint cartilage and the underlying bone of the knee, producing pain, stiffness and functional impairment. It is one of the most common types of arthritis and a major cause of disability; although it can affect people of any age, it is most frequent in older adults, with risk factors including age, family history, overweight and obesity, and prior joint injury or overuse. As a focus of Arthritis Research and Therapy, knee osteoarthritis is studied with attention to both treatment and the wider consequences of the disease. Studies in this journal's corpus include a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial evaluating an investigational agent in knee arthritis and an examination of Tai-Chi exercise training in older adults with painful knee osteoarthritis. A larger group of related articles considers osteoarthritis in the context of ageing and comorbidity, addressing its associations with falls, frailty, sarcopenia, depression and the possible role of vitamin D, as well as overweight, intramuscular fat deposition and arthroplasty-related infection risk.
