Overview

Rheumatology is the medical specialty concerned with the diagnosis, treatment, and long-term management of rheumatic diseases, disorders that affect the joints, bones, muscles, and connective tissues and frequently involve immune-mediated inflammation. Its scope includes inflammatory arthritides such as rheumatoid and juvenile idiopathic arthritis, degenerative joint disease, systemic autoimmune conditions, crystal arthropathies, and soft-tissue and pain syndromes including fibromyalgia. Because many rheumatic diseases are systemic, the specialty also addresses extra-articular manifestations affecting the eyes, skin, and internal organs, and it intersects with adjacent fields when complications or treatments produce effects elsewhere, as in drug-related ocular findings reported with disease-modifying agents. Care draws on clinical evaluation, serological and imaging investigation, and a therapeutic repertoire spanning anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory drugs, physical therapy, and patient education. The discipline is increasingly oriented toward precision approaches that use molecular and clinical features to stratify patients and individualize treatment, reflecting a broader move toward precision rheumatology. Allied management strategies, including dietary and lifestyle interventions explored in conditions such as fibromyalgia, complement pharmacological care. Clinical descriptions from rheumatology clinics in varied settings illustrate the breadth of presentations and the importance of early recognition. Research themes include immunopathogenesis, biomarker-guided stratification, outcome measurement, and the optimization of multidisciplinary, long-term management to control inflammation and preserve function.
