Overview

Pathology and histopathology together describe the study of disease through the examination of tissues and cells, with histopathology referring specifically to the microscopic analysis of tissue samples. After a specimen is collected by biopsy or during surgery, it is fixed, sectioned, stained, and examined under the microscope so that abnormalities in cell and tissue structure can be identified. This approach allows diseases such as cancer, infection, and chronic inflammation to be recognized and classified, supporting accurate diagnosis, prognosis, and the planning of treatment. It is one of the foundational methods of diagnostic medicine. Within this journal's Clinical and Diagnostic Pathology scope, histopathological examination is central to characterizing lesions and reaching definitive diagnoses, often through detailed case reports that show how microscopic findings clarify the nature of a mass or abnormal tissue. By correlating microscopic features with clinical presentation, this work demonstrates how tissue-level evidence resolves diagnostic uncertainty and informs patient care. This page gathers encyclopedic information on pathology and histopathology together with peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to the microscopic diagnosis of disease.
