Overview

HIV infection is the condition caused by the human immunodeficiency virus, a retrovirus that attacks and weakens the immune system, leaving the body less able to defend against other infections and diseases. It is transmitted primarily through unprotected sexual contact, sharing of needles for drug use, and from an infected mother to her child during pregnancy, childbirth, or breastfeeding. Over time, untreated HIV infection depletes immune cells and can progress to AIDS, but antiretroviral therapy can suppress viral replication, preserve immune function, and greatly reduce the risk of transmission to others. Research in this journal addresses the epidemiology, prevention, and clinical management of HIV infection, with frequent attention to high-burden and resource-limited settings. Studies examine HIV status among serodiscordant couples and pregnant women, clinical profiles and outcomes of hospitalized HIV-infected patients, adherence to and implementation of pre-exposure prophylaxis among female sex workers and in primary care, healthcare workers' knowledge and attitudes toward prophylaxis, and risk factors among clients of counseling and testing centers. Additional work investigates psychosocial dimensions such as emotional support, self-esteem, and depressive symptoms among HIV-positive women. Key aspects of the field include transmission and risk factors, prevention including prophylaxis and condom use, antiretroviral treatment, and the psychosocial and clinical care of people living with HIV.
