Overview

Anastomosis is the surgical joining of two structures, most commonly two ends of the bowel, a blood vessel, or another hollow organ, to restore or create continuity for the passage of contents such as intestinal material or blood. In colorectal surgery, an anastomosis reconnects segments of the colon or rectum after a diseased portion has been removed, allowing normal bowel function to resume.
