Overview

Colon cancer is a malignancy that begins in the colon, the longest part of the large intestine, and together with rectal cancer is often grouped as colorectal cancer. It is among the most commonly diagnosed cancers worldwide and a leading cause of cancer death. Many cases arise from precancerous polyps in the bowel lining, and warning signs can include a persistent change in bowel habits, rectal bleeding, abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, fatigue, and iron-deficiency anaemia. Screening, including stool-based tests and colonoscopy, is central to early detection and prevention, while diagnosis and prognosis increasingly draw on molecular markers. Research themes include the biology of tumour growth and metastasis, the role of cell-adhesion molecules such as E-cadherin and VCAM-1, and emerging diagnostic tools based on microRNA detection in stool. Treatment typically combines surgery with chemotherapy, radiation, and targeted therapy, and dietary and lifestyle factors are studied for their influence on risk, particularly in lower-resource settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed work spanning these areas, including studies on prostate apoptosis response protein-4 and metastasis, microRNA-based and microfluidic diagnostic screening, anatomical contributors to interval cancers, predictors of colon cancer in patients with iron deficiency, fecal immunochemical test screening programmes, and dietary intervention in colorectal cancer.
