Overview

Complex systems are systems made up of many interconnected and interacting components whose collective behavior cannot be fully understood or predicted from the properties of the individual parts alone. Such systems are characterized by emergence, self-organization, nonlinearity, feedback loops, and adaptation, and they appear throughout nature and society, from ecosystems, climate, and living organisms to transportation, social, and financial networks. The study of complex systems draws on mathematics, physics, computer science, and biology to model how local interactions give rise to large-scale patterns and how such systems respond to perturbation, sometimes resilient and sometimes prone to cascading failure. As a multidisciplinary outlet, Current Scientific Research publishes work spanning the natural and applied sciences, including perspectives that approach biological organization through systems and complexity-oriented frameworks, such as inquiries into why interconnected human body systems can undergo catastrophic failure and conceptual work proposing fractal codes underlying biological life. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to complex systems and the interdisciplinary study of how interacting components produce emergent, system-level behavior.
