Overview
A pituitary adenoma is a usually benign tumour that develops in the pituitary gland, the small endocrine organ at the base of the brain that controls the production of many of the body's hormones. Depending on their type, pituitary adenomas may secrete excess hormones, producing conditions such as acromegaly, Cushing's disease, or hyperprolactinaemia, or they may be non-functioning and cause symptoms by pressing on surrounding structures, including the optic chiasm, leading to visual disturbances and headaches. Some pituitary adenomas occur as part of inherited endocrine syndromes. Management depends on tumour type and size and may involve medication, surgery, or radiotherapy, together with treatment of any hormonal imbalance. The journal Endocrinology And Hormones publishes peer-reviewed research on the endocrine system and hormonal disorders. Relevant work in this collection includes a study of multiple endocrine neoplasia type 1, a genetic syndrome in which pituitary adenomas can arise alongside other endocrine tumours, a report of a rare sellar lesion affecting the pituitary region, and a case series on chiasmal lesions with ocular manifestations, reflecting the visual consequences that pituitary-region tumours can cause. This page gathers open-access scholarship relevant to pituitary adenomas and endocrine tumours.
