Overview

Etiological Diagnosis is the process of identifying the underlying cause or origin of a disease, rather than simply describing its symptoms or signs. By establishing the specific causative agent or mechanism, such as an infection, a tumor, a genetic defect, a metabolic disturbance, or an environmental exposure, clinicians can select treatment that targets the root of the condition and can better predict its course. Etiological Diagnosis draws on clinical history, physical examination, laboratory and imaging investigations, and increasingly on histopathology and molecular testing, and it is fundamental to evidence-based management across medicine. The journal Etiological Diagnosis is a peer-reviewed, open-access publication concerned with determining the causes of disease through clinical, laboratory, and pathological investigation. This is illustrated by a clinicopathologic analysis of granulomatous gastritis across biopsy cases, which examines how histopathological study of tissue helps establish the cause of a gastric inflammatory disorder, an example of etiology being defined from pathological evidence. The separately listed review of antimony content in the human prostate concerns trace-element analysis rather than disease etiology and is outside this topic. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to identifying the causes of disease.
