Overview
Epilepsy is a chronic neurological disorder characterized by an enduring predisposition to recurrent, unprovoked seizures arising from abnormal, synchronized electrical activity in populations of cortical neurons. Seizures vary from focal events with preserved or altered awareness to generalized convulsions, and the underlying causes include genetic predisposition, structural and metabolic abnormalities, and acquired brain injury. Diagnosis rests on clinical history, electroencephalography, and neuroimaging, while management spans antiseizure medications, dietary therapy such as ketogenic regimens, neuromodulation, and surgery for drug-resistant cases. The studies collected here reflect several of these dimensions: genetic polymorphisms in patients with epilepsy, the search for new targets of deep brain stimulation, and dexamethasone pulse therapy in refractory childhood seizure disorders. Differential and overlap considerations appear in work distinguishing non-epileptic seizures from epilepsy, while public-health and educational aspects are addressed through studies of knowledge and attitudes toward epilepsy among primary school teachers. Adjacent neurological and nutritional themes—high-fat and ketogenic dietary approaches for brain health, the role of blinding in neurological clinical research, and neuroinflammatory and micronutrient influences—situate epilepsy within broader neuroscience. Methods range from genetic and experimental studies to clinical case reports, reviews, and survey research. This topic assembles peer-reviewed research on the mechanisms, diagnosis, and treatment of epilepsy and related seizure disorders.
