Overview

Mitochondria are membrane-bound organelles found in most eukaryotic cells that generate adenosine triphosphate (ATP) through oxidative phosphorylation, serving as the primary energy source for cellular processes. Research published in this journal examines mitochondrial function across diverse biological contexts, including reproductive health, metabolic regulation, and cellular stress responses. Studies have investigated oxidative stress effects on mitochondria in human sperm and rat testicular tissue following ischemia-reperfusion injury, exploring therapeutic interventions such as ozone therapy. Additional work has examined mitochondrial membrane enzyme activity in liver tissue exposed to pesticides, the role of mitochondrial function in cardiac physiology across different hormonal states, and energy metabolism in adipose tissue relevant to obesity. Research has also addressed mitochondrial protection through antioxidant compounds including tea polysaccharides and L-carnitine supplementation during oocyte maturation, as well as mitochondrial involvement in yeast bioprocesses for biotechnological applications. Further investigations have explored mitochondrial oxidative damage in the context of telomere attrition, aging processes, and the effects of reverse transcriptase inhibitors on cellular function. Understanding mitochondrial biology remains essential for addressing metabolic disorders, reproductive health, aging, and developing therapeutic strategies targeting cellular energy production and oxidative stress management.
