Overview
Mental health is a state of psychological and emotional wellbeing in which a person can realise their abilities, cope with the normal stresses of life, function in relationships and work, and contribute to their community. It is shaped by the interaction of biological, psychological and social determinants, and exists on a continuum encompassing both positive wellbeing and the diagnosable disorders of mood, anxiety, cognition and behaviour. The study of mental health spans psychology, psychiatry and public health, addressing cognitive function, emotional regulation, social interaction, the prevention and treatment of disorder, and the impact of social and environmental adversity. Research in this area includes the prevalence of psychological distress across urban and rural populations; affiliate stigma, compassion fatigue and compassion satisfaction among mental-health service providers in psychiatric hospitals; the relationship between religion and mental health; mental-health disparities among LGBTQ+ youth; the mental health of cancer survivors and breast-cancer patients; the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic; the mental-health situation of climate-migrant women in urban slums; the experiences of partners of veterans with mental-health difficulties; and community-based mentoring and global opinion data for mental-health promotion. Across these contributions the field examines the determinants, disparities, service provision and promotion of mental health, integrating clinical, social and population perspectives to understand wellbeing and the prevention and management of psychological distress and disorder.
