Overview

Molecular biology is the study of biological processes at the level of the molecules that carry and express genetic information, focusing on the structure, function and regulation of nucleic acids and proteins and the interactions between them. It investigates how DNA is replicated and repaired, how genetic information is transcribed into RNA and translated into protein, and how gene expression is controlled across development, differentiation and disease. The discipline also encompasses the experimental and analytical techniques that make these processes accessible, including nucleic acid library construction, sequencing, cloning, and the genomic and proteomic methods used to characterise genes, transcripts, mutations and protein complements on a large scale. Studies in this area examine proteomic and genomic techniques, the molecular, cellular and evolutionary biology of specific proteins such as RBM45, the biogenesis and regulatory roles of circular RNAs, the synthesis of nucleic acid libraries, the molecular characteristics of tumours such as meningioma, and the detection and interpretation of somatic mutations. By resolving how macromolecules encode, transmit and execute biological instructions, molecular biology provides the mechanistic foundation linking genotype to cellular phenotype and supplies the tools used throughout the life sciences to dissect normal function and disease.
