Overview
Ventricular septal defects are abnormal openings in the wall separating the heart's two lower chambers, allowing blood to flow between the left and right ventricles. These defects represent one of the most common forms of congenital heart disease encountered in clinical practice. Research published in Hypertension and Cardiology has examined the epidemiological patterns of congenital heart defects, including ventricular septal defects, within specific populations. A 2022 study documented the prevalence of various congenital heart malformations among neonates in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, contributing to understanding of how these conditions present in different geographic and demographic contexts. The journal has also published case reports on complex congenital cardiac anomalies that may coexist with or share diagnostic considerations with ventricular septal defects, such as Ebstein's anomaly. Understanding the frequency and presentation of ventricular septal defects matters because these lesions can lead to significant hemodynamic consequences, including pulmonary overcirculation, heart failure, and pulmonary hypertension if left untreated. Early detection through systematic screening and accurate diagnosis enables timely intervention, whether through medical management or surgical repair, improving outcomes for affected individuals across diverse healthcare settings.
