Overview
Red blood cells (erythrocytes) are the most numerous cells in the blood and are specialized for transporting oxygen from the lungs to the body's tissues and carrying carbon dioxide back for exhalation. In humans they are typically biconcave, disc-shaped cells that lack a nucleus and are packed with hemoglobin, the iron-containing protein that binds and releases oxygen. Their production in the bone marrow is regulated by the hormone erythropoietin, and their number and function are central to oxygen delivery. Abnormalities in red blood cells underlie many disorders, including anemia, in which a reduced red-cell count or hemoglobin level limits oxygen transport, and inherited conditions such as sickle cell disease.
