Overview

Energy healing is a category of complementary and alternative practice based on the premise that an energy field associated with the body can be influenced to support physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Practices grouped under this term, such as Reiki, therapeutic touch, and various biofield modalities, hold that imbalances or disturbances in this purported energy can be addressed by a practitioner to encourage the body's own healing processes. Energy healing is typically used alongside, rather than in place of, conventional medical care, and its proposed mechanisms remain outside established physical and biological theory, which is why it is studied within the framework of complementary medicine. Research published through the International Journal of Complementary Medicine engages with this area, including a series of studies examining the reported effects of consciousness energy healing and biofield energy treatment on the physicochemical, thermal, and isotopic properties of compounds such as ascorbic acid, ofloxacin, metronidazole, and silver-based agents, as well as evaluations using cell-line and animal models. These works investigate measurable laboratory parameters associated with such treatments. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access scholarship relevant to energy healing and its study within complementary and integrative medicine.
