Overview
Personal protective equipment (PPE) comprises the clothing, masks, and gear designed to shield wearers from exposure to infectious agents and other workplace hazards. In the context of infectious disease, PPE includes face masks and respirators, eye protection such as goggles and face shields, gloves, gowns, and foot and torso coverings, all intended to interrupt the transmission of pathogens to healthcare workers and the public. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the correct selection, use, and supply of PPE became central to protecting frontline staff and limiting the spread of SARS-CoV-2. Research in the International Journal of Coronaviruses and related journals addresses PPE directly. Studies review eye and facial protectors and torso and footwear protection for the COVID-19 pandemic and possible future epidemics, assess awareness of personal protective equipment among laboratory workers, and examine infection-prevention and control knowledge and practices among healthcare workers, alongside work on the pandemic's effect on surgical practice. Together these contributions illustrate how PPE supports infection control in clinical and laboratory settings. This page gathers peer-reviewed, open-access research relevant to personal protective equipment, offering an evidence-based resource for readers interested in protective practices and infection prevention.
