Overview

MicroRNAs are short, single-stranded non-coding RNA molecules, approximately twenty to twenty-five nucleotides long, that regulate gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. By binding through partial complementarity to target messenger RNAs, typically in their three-prime untranslated regions, microRNAs direct translational repression or transcript degradation within the RNA-induced silencing complex, and a single microRNA can fine-tune many targets across networks that govern development, differentiation, proliferation, and stress responses. Because their expression is altered in cancers, cardiovascular, metabolic, and other diseases, and because they are stable in body fluids, microRNAs are studied both as regulatory mechanisms and as minimally invasive biomarkers, as well as candidate therapeutic agents and targets. Research relevant to this topic includes the role of microRNAs and antioxidative enzymes in adventitious rooting in plants, microRNAs as tools for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of hypertension and ischemic heart disease, microfluidic and digital-PCR assays employing microRNAs for colon-cancer screening in low-resource settings, newborn microRNA expression as candidate biomarkers, microRNA regulation of OCT4 and miR-21 in cancer, dietary perspectives on microRNAs, and microRNAs as activators of dental-implant surfaces. Methods span molecular biology, quantitative and digital PCR, microfluidics, and meta-analysis. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on microRNA biology, regulation, and diagnostic and therapeutic applications.
