Overview
Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a condition in which the coronary arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle become narrowed or blocked, usually by the buildup of fatty atherosclerotic plaque, reducing oxygen-rich blood flow to the myocardium. This restricted supply can cause angina (chest pain), and a complete blockage may trigger a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or sudden cardiac death. CHD is among the leading causes of death and disability worldwide, particularly in industrialized populations. Major modifiable risk factors include high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity, and poor diet, while age, sex, and genetic predisposition are non-modifiable contributors. Prevention and management emphasize lifestyle modification, control of risk factors, pharmacological therapy, and, when needed, revascularization procedures such as percutaneous coronary intervention. Research relevant to this topic in the journal addresses genetic polymorphisms associated with CHD risk, outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention in elderly patients with ischemic heart disease, heart failure in primary care, microRNA-based therapeutic strategies for ischemic heart disease, dietary and nutritional influences on cardiovascular risk factors, the cardiovascular effects of involuntary smoking and vaping, and assessment of cardiac function, reflecting the disease's intersection with genetics, nutrition, lifestyle, and clinical cardiology.
