Overview

Neurodegenerative diseases are progressive disorders characterized by the gradual loss of structure and function of neurons, often culminating in cell death, and include Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and related conditions. They arise from complex interactions among genetic susceptibility, ageing, and environmental exposures, and share converging molecular mechanisms such as protein misfolding and aggregation, oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction, neuroinflammation, and disrupted proteostasis. Mechanistic research in this area examines defective molecular pathways in Parkinson's disease, the contribution of microglial and immune mediators including TREM2 and associated genetic polymorphisms, and the regulatory roles of proteins such as optineurin and RBM45 in neuronal signaling and survival. Experimental neurotoxicity models, including manganese- and rotenone-induced injury, probe oxidative and inflammatory mechanisms and the neuroprotective potential of phytochemicals such as quercetin and chlorogenic acid. Related themes include molecular biomarkers for early detection, synaptic and somatic plasticity, ageing biology, and emerging stem-cell research and its ethical dimensions. The journal publishes peer-reviewed mechanistic, biomarker, and experimental studies addressing the molecular and cellular basis of neurodegeneration, candidate neuroprotective interventions, and the genetic and oxidative pathways underlying progressive neuronal loss.
