Overview
Null results are research findings that show no statistically significant effect, relationship, or difference between variables being studied, contrary to the researcher's hypothesis or expectations. The International Journal of Negative Results publishes studies documenting such outcomes across medical and scientific disciplines, recognizing their essential role in preventing publication bias and informing future research directions. Published research in this journal demonstrates how null findings contribute valuable knowledge in clinical settings, such as evaluating the actual impact of diagnostic imaging protocols during public health emergencies when expected benefits may not materialize as anticipated, and in genetic medicine where molecular characterization efforts may reveal unexpected complexities or limitations in therapeutic approaches. These studies address the critical gap in scientific literature where negative or inconclusive results are historically underreported despite their importance for evidence-based practice. By documenting what interventions or approaches do not produce expected outcomes, null results prevent redundant research efforts, help refine theoretical models, and provide a more complete picture of scientific inquiry. This work supports transparent reporting standards and helps clinicians and researchers make informed decisions based on the full spectrum of available evidence rather than only positive findings.
