Overview
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common and serious mental-health condition characterized by persistent low mood, loss of interest or pleasure in activities, and a range of cognitive and physical symptoms that impair daily functioning for at least two weeks. Core features include profound sadness, hopelessness, changes in sleep and appetite, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, and feelings of worthlessness, and in severe cases the disorder is associated with suicidal thoughts and behavior. MDD arises from an interplay of biological, psychological, and social factors and frequently co-occurs with chronic physical illnesses such as cancer, dementia, and osteoarthritis, as well as with other mental-health and substance-use disorders. Assessment relies on clinical evaluation, and treatment commonly combines psychotherapy, pharmacotherapy, and psychosocial support. Reflecting the analytical orientation of this neuroinformatics journal, the published research touches on multiple facets of depression, including autobiographical memory and identity development in adolescence in relation to depression, environmental and socioeconomic correlates of depression analyzed at the population level, combined therapy for depressed cancer patients with pain, network-analysis approaches to depressive symptoms among teachers, severity of hopelessness in psychiatric inpatients, the relationship between depression and dementia, and the mental-health status of cancer patients, illustrating clinical, computational, and epidemiological perspectives on the disorder.
