Overview

English is a West Germanic language and the most widely used vehicular language in international scholarship, business, and science. In applied linguistics it is studied both as a first language and, more extensively, as a second or foreign language (ESL/EFL), where learners acquire it alongside an existing native language. Research in this area spans syntax, morphology, phonology, lexis, pragmatics, and discourse, and increasingly draws on quantitative methods to characterize learner performance. A central concern is the assessment of writing and the constructs that underlie proficiency, including syntactic complexity, lexical sophistication, accuracy, and fluency, and how these relate to judgements of overall quality. Studies of English for academic purposes examine argumentative essay writing, genre conventions, and the discourse features that distinguish skilled from developing writers, often using corpus-based indices and clause-level analysis. Allied strands address second-language acquisition theory, error analysis, language testing, and the role of instruction and feedback in development. Work in this field carries practical implications for curriculum design, language pedagogy, and standards for academic publication. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research examining English language structure, acquisition, and use, including investigations of syntactic complexity and writing quality in EFL contexts.
