Overview

Deformation-based morphometry is a neuroimaging analysis technique that quantifies anatomical differences in brain structure by measuring local shape changes and tissue deformations when individual brain images are spatially transformed to match a common template. Research published in Neurological Research and Therapy has applied this method to investigate structural brain alterations associated with behavioral disturbances in neurodegenerative disease. Specifically, the journal has featured work examining neurobiological distinctions between aggression and agitation in persons with dementia, using deformation-based morphometry to identify regional brain volume differences that may underlie these clinically distinct behavioral symptoms. This approach enables researchers to detect subtle patterns of atrophy or expansion in specific brain regions that might not be apparent through traditional volumetric measurements alone. The technique is particularly valuable in dementia research because it can reveal how localized structural changes in areas such as the frontal and temporal lobes relate to specific neuropsychiatric manifestations. Understanding these structure-behavior relationships through deformation-based morphometry contributes to more precise characterization of dementia subtypes and may ultimately inform targeted interventions for managing challenging behavioral symptoms in affected individuals.
