Overview

In chemistry, a solution is a homogeneous mixture in which a solute is uniformly dispersed at the molecular or ionic level throughout a solvent, with aqueous solutions, where water is the solvent, being the most prevalent. Solution chemistry governs concentration, solubility, dissociation, equilibrium, and the acid-base and redox behaviour that underpin much of analytical, synthetic, and environmental chemistry. Quantitative treatment of solutions encompasses thermodynamic frameworks for electrolytic systems, formulation of acid-base and isohydricity conditions, and the balance relations used to describe complex electrolyte equilibria. A major applied theme is the use of aqueous solutions in environmental remediation, including the adsorptive removal of dyes such as methyl violet and neutral red using doped perovskite oxides, and corrosion inhibition of metals in acidic media by plant-derived extracts. Solution-phase methods also support chemical sensing, such as optical determination of metal ions, surfactant-mediated separation across liquid membranes, and enhanced oil recovery using polymer additives. Across these contexts, control of solution composition, pH, and ionic strength determines reactivity and separation efficiency. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on solution chemistry, electrolyte systems, and the application of aqueous-phase processes to analysis, separation, and environmental treatment.
