Overview
Ophthalmology is the branch of medicine devoted to the structure, function, and diseases of the eye and visual system, encompassing the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disorders affecting vision. Ophthalmologists are medical specialists trained to manage a wide spectrum of conditions, from refractive errors and cataracts to glaucoma, retinal disease, and disorders of the optic nerve and eye movements, and they perform both medical and surgical treatments. The field also addresses how problems in the brain and nervous system can manifest in the eyes, making careful examination of vision and ocular function valuable in broader clinical assessment. Advances in imaging, surgical technique, and screening have steadily improved the detection and management of eye disease and the preservation of sight. Research published in this journal spans many areas of ophthalmology, including studies on retinal vein occlusion, the ocular manifestations of chiasmal lesions, screening for severe retinopathy of prematurity, the validity of vision-screening tools, and the correction of corneal astigmatism, reflecting the breadth of the discipline. As an open-access journal devoted to Ophthalmic Science, this publication addresses the care and preservation of vision. This page collects peer-reviewed scholarship relevant to ophthalmology and the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions.
