Overview
Ophthalmological diagnosis and treatment is the clinical practice of identifying and managing diseases and disorders of the eye and visual system, integrating examination, imaging, and medical or surgical intervention to preserve and restore vision. Diagnosis draws on detailed assessment of ocular structures and function, increasingly supported by advanced imaging such as spectral-domain and enhanced-depth optical coherence tomography, which provides high-resolution views of the retina and choroid for conditions including chorioretinal inflammatory disease and retinal vascular and degenerative disorders. The field spans the retina, optic pathways, and refractive system, addressing entities such as retinopathy of prematurity, macular telangiectasia with associated retinal changes, and chiasmal lesions that produce ocular manifestations, as well as the effects of refractive conditions like astigmatism on visual processing in the cortex. Effective care depends on accurate identification of disease, appropriate use of diagnostic technology, and timely treatment, which may be medical, laser-based, or surgical. Scholarship in this area reports case series, imaging-based evaluation, and the management of complex or sight-threatening conditions, often in tertiary settings and across the lifespan from neonates to adults. The resulting evidence refines diagnostic accuracy, clarifies disease mechanisms and presentations, and informs treatment strategies aimed at protecting visual function and improving outcomes for patients with eye disease.
