Overview
Primary care is the provision of integrated, accessible health-care services by clinicians who serve as the first point of contact for most health needs and who sustain a continuing relationship with patients across the life course. It addresses a broad range of acute and chronic conditions, delivers preventive care and screening, manages multimorbidity and frailty, and coordinates referral to specialist and hospital services. Centred on the person rather than a single disease, primary care emphasises comprehensiveness, continuity, prevention, and the early detection and management of risk, and is widely regarded as foundational to effective and equitable health systems. Research in this area examines the needs of prediabetes patients in technology-enhanced lifestyle interventions, screening and linkage to pre-exposure prophylaxis within primary care, the burden of unintentional childhood injury and caregiver knowledge, and obesity prevalence in community settings. Further work addresses care of chronic disease and frail patients in general practice, the patient-centred medical home, social determinants of access, and reassessment of clinical-epidemiological concepts since the COVID-19 pandemic. Studies draw on baseline assessments, qualitative inquiry, and cross-sectional designs across diverse settings. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the organisation, delivery, and outcomes of primary care.
