Overview

Plant biology, or botany, is the scientific study of plants: their cellular and molecular organization, physiology, development, reproduction, metabolism, evolution, and ecological relationships. At the molecular level it examines how gene expression is regulated and how plants synthesize the secondary metabolites that govern their growth and defense. Non-coding regulatory RNAs, including the circular RNAs generated by back-splicing, are an active area of inquiry because they modulate transcript stability and post-transcriptional control during stress responses and developmental transitions. A substantial branch of plant biology addresses phytochemistry and pharmacognosy, characterizing bioactive constituents such as saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, and terpenoids isolated from roots, stems, and bark, and evaluating their physiological activities. Plant biology also encompasses agronomy and crop science, where the cultivation, yield, and agronomic management of food and underutilized species are studied to support food security. Major sub-areas include cell and developmental biology, plant physiology, genetics and genomics, systematics and taxonomy, ecology, and ethnobotany. Methodologically the field integrates microscopy, chemical extraction and assay, molecular sequencing, and field trials. Collectively this knowledge underpins agriculture, conservation, natural-product discovery, and an understanding of how plant systems sustain terrestrial ecosystems.
