Overview
Plant biotechnology is a scientific field that uses methods of genetic engineering to modify the genetics of plants for desirable traits. These traits may include increased pest resistance, higher yield, improved nutritional content, and increased ability to withstand environmental stresses. This technology has been used to develop many new varieties of highly productive and nutritious crops, which have enabled farmers, consumers, and food industries to benefit from improved production and nutrition. In addition, plant biotechnology has enabled scientists to better understand the complex process of plant growth and development, which can be applied in many areas, ranging from food security to pharmaceuticals and bioproducts.
