Overview
Allergy is a hypersensitivity reaction of the adaptive immune system to normally harmless environmental substances, in which prior sensitization leads to an exaggerated response on re-exposure to the offending allergen. Classic immediate (type I) allergy is mediated by allergen-specific immunoglobulin E (IgE) bound to mast cells and basophils; cross-linking of this IgE triggers degranulation and the release of histamine and other mediators, producing rhinitis, urticaria, angioedema, bronchospasm, and, in severe cases, anaphylaxis. Delayed, T-cell-mediated (type IV) hypersensitivity underlies allergic contact dermatitis and many drug eruptions, where diagnosis often relies on patch testing or lymphocyte stimulation assays. Common triggers include pollens, dust mites, foods, insect and animal venoms, cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals, the last spanning sulfonamides, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and tissue adhesives. Management combines allergen identification and avoidance, pharmacotherapy, and, for selected sensitizations, immunotherapy, alongside structured documentation of adverse drug events to support safer prescribing. The peer-reviewed research compiled here reflects these themes, including delayed allergy after cyanoacrylate exposure, contact reactions assessed by patch testing, cross-reactive drug hypersensitivity, food- and venom-related reactions, and dietary contributions to immune-mediated and gluten-related conditions, illustrating the breadth of allergic pathology relevant to preventive and clinical care.
