Overview
Functional genomics is the field of molecular biology that seeks to understand the functions and interactions of genes and other genomic elements, moving beyond cataloguing sequences to determining what they do and how they are regulated. Whereas structural genomics describes the content and organization of genomes, functional genomics asks how genes are transcribed, translated, and controlled, and how their products operate within cells and whole organisms. It exploits genome-wide and high-throughput approaches, including transcriptomics to measure gene expression, proteomics to characterize the proteins encoded, and gene expression and perturbation analyses to link genotype to phenotype. By integrating these data, functional genomics elucidates regulatory networks, signalling pathways, and the cellular consequences of genetic variation, often with the support of bioinformatics to manage and interpret large and complex datasets. The approach illuminates normal developmental and physiological processes and the molecular basis of disease, for example by analyzing gene expression changes that accompany altered cellular behavior, and it informs the identification of biomarkers and therapeutic targets. Functional genomics also underpins applications in biotechnology, where understanding gene function guides the engineering of organisms and the development of products. As sequencing, profiling, and computational tools advance, functional genomics increasingly connects molecular information across DNA, RNA, and protein levels, providing a systems-level view of how genomes generate the functions of living cells and organisms.
