Overview
Gene expression is the process by which the information encoded in a gene's DNA sequence is used to synthesize a functional product, typically a protein, through the steps of transcription into RNA and translation into a polypeptide. It is the fundamental mechanism through which genotype gives rise to phenotype, and its regulation allows cells to produce the right proteins in the right amounts at the right times. Control of gene expression occurs at multiple levels, including transcription factor binding, epigenetic modification, RNA processing, and regulation by small RNAs, enabling cells to respond to developmental cues and environmental signals. Gene expression is a core subject of Proteomics and Genomics Research, with broad relevance to disease mechanisms and personalized medicine. Studies in this journal investigate gene expression in colorectal cancer, including resistance to apoptosis and regulation of specific genes, computational analysis of regulatory single-nucleotide polymorphisms and transcription factor binding sites in relation to high-altitude adaptation and disease, cytokine gene expression in response to viral proteins, microRNA regulation of stem-cell genes, and epigenetic regulation of gene expression in chronic pain. Related work covers proteomic and genomic techniques in cancer diagnostics and the bioinformatics underlying disease diagnosis. Key aspects of the field include transcriptional regulation, epigenetics, expression profiling, and the application of expression data to understanding and treating disease.
