Overview
Mental health is a state of well-being in which a person can cope with the ordinary stresses of life, work productively, realize their abilities, and contribute to their community. It is more than the absence of mental illness, encompassing emotional, psychological, and social functioning, and it exists on a continuum that spans promotion of well-being, prevention of disorder, and care and recovery for those affected. Mental health is shaped by determinants operating at many levels: social, economic, and environmental conditions, including discrimination, inequity, and access to services, all influence who flourishes and who falls ill. Stigma remains a major barrier, deterring help-seeking and compounding disparities among marginalized groups. Equally important is the well-being of the workforce that delivers care, where sustained exposure to others' suffering can produce compassion fatigue and burnout, alongside the protective experience of compassion satisfaction. Mental health also interacts closely with physical illness, each affecting the course and outcome of the other. This journal publishes peer-reviewed research in this area, including work on stigma and provider well-being, mental-health disparities and equity, the interplay of mental and physical health, and approaches to the promotion and protection of well-being across diverse populations and settings.
