Overview
Sports medicine is the branch of medicine concerned with physical activity and exercise, focusing on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of injuries and conditions related to sport, as well as the promotion of health and performance through movement. It is inherently multidisciplinary, drawing on orthopaedics, exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition, cardiology, and rehabilitation to serve recreational participants, competitive athletes, and the general population. A major emphasis is the prevention and management of musculoskeletal injury, including the analysis of movement patterns and kinetic-chain relationships to reduce common problems such as ankle sprains, and the study of injury incidence, risk factors, and outcomes across sports, including high-risk activities like equestrian disciplines associated with spinal cord injury. The discipline also addresses the iatrogenic risks of treatment, such as joint infection following intra-articular injection, and the application of monitoring technologies, including continuous glucose measurement in elite athletes, to inform training and recovery. Beyond injury, Sports and Exercise Medicine examines the therapeutic role of physical activity in managing chronic disease, for example in the control of hypertension, and the physiological adaptations underlying fitness. Practitioners integrate clinical assessment, imaging, and evidence-based rehabilitation with strategies for safe return to activity. By uniting performance optimization with injury prevention and the broad health benefits of exercise, sports medicine bridges clinical care and the science of human movement.
