Overview

Infectious disease is illness caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites, or their toxic products, and by the transmission of these agents between hosts. Transmission occurs through respiratory droplets and aerosols, direct contact, contaminated food and water, vectors such as insects, and other routes, and the resulting burden is shaped by host immunity, pathogen virulence, and environmental and social conditions. The field integrates microbiology, immunology, epidemiology, and clinical medicine to address diagnosis, treatment, surveillance, outbreak control, and the dynamics of emerging and re-emerging pathogens, the latter increasingly influenced by climate change and global interconnection. Mathematical modeling, immunoassays, and molecular and genomic techniques support detection, monitoring, and intervention. Research relevant to this topic includes reimbursement policy for infectious disease, narrative review of COVID-19 and modeling of its transmission, mathematical modeling of typhoid fever transmission and intervention impact, immunoassay and immunogenomic approaches for immunomonitoring, the emergence and geopolitics of infectious diseases, the threat of malaria, the impact of climate change on public health, hematologic changes in early COVID-19, and proteomic and genomic methods in diagnostics. Methods span epidemiological modeling, laboratory and clinical studies, and reviews. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on infectious and tropical diseases, their transmission, and their control.
