Overview

The British Isles have a temperate and maritime climate, characterised by cool summers and mild winters, and which is the primary influence on weather patterns in the region. Rainfall is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year. This generally mild climate is one of the main reasons why the British Isles are able to sustain a wide variety of flora and fauna. The British Isles’ weather is also of great significance for the region’s economy, as it has made it possible for traditional industries such as farming and fishing to remain in operation. Additionally, the mildness of the climate has attracted both tourists and businesses. The region’s temperate climate is monitored and studied closely in order to provide further insight into the effects of global warming and climate change on the British Isles.
