Overview

Sexual and reproductive health is a state of physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being in relation to sexuality and the reproductive system, not merely the absence of disease or dysfunction. It encompasses the ability to have safe and satisfying sexual relationships, to decide whether and when to have children, and to access accurate information and appropriate services. Core components include family planning and contraception, maternal and newborn health, prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections, management of infertility, and education that enables informed decisions. Sexual and reproductive health is shaped not only by clinical care but also by social factors such as gender norms, education, and the rights of individuals to make autonomous choices free from coercion and discrimination, and it is especially important during adolescence, when knowledge and access can profoundly affect lifelong outcomes. Women's Reproductive Health publishes peer-reviewed research across this field, including studies of parent-adolescent communication on sexual and reproductive health in Ethiopia, Nepal, and other settings, adolescents' knowledge of reproductive health, barriers to care for marginalized groups, preconception care, and the prevalence of sexually transmitted infections. This page gathers open-access research relevant to sexual and reproductive health across populations and settings.
