Overview

Zoological species are categorizations of living organisms according to their taxonomic ranks. Species have distinct characteristics that serve as the basis for the classification of all living creatures, from the smallest bacteria up to the largest mammals. Species are a vital part of any ecosystem, providing a balance and sustaining the overall health of it and its inhabitants. They are an important component of the food web, providing necessary nutrients, shelter, and protection. Additionally, species provide invaluable knowledge to science, such as data on evolutionary processes, metabolism, and behavior. Knowledge of species is also essential for conservation and management efforts, allowing us to identify and protect unique populations and minimize the threats they may face.
