Overview

Pyoderma is a bacterial infection of the skin characterised by the formation of pus. The term covers a range of conditions, from superficial infections such as impetigo and folliculitis to deeper involvement producing boils, abscesses, and inflamed, pus-filled lesions. Most cases are caused by common skin bacteria, particularly species of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, which invade the skin when its protective barrier is broken or when local or general defences are weakened. Typical features include redness, swelling, warmth, pain, and discharge, and the infection can occur anywhere on the body but often affects exposed or moist areas. Treatment depends on severity and extent and may include good skin hygiene, topical antiseptics or antibiotics, and systemic antibiotics for more serious or widespread disease; the emergence of antibiotic-resistant strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, can complicate management. Pyoderma also occurs in animals, where it is a common dermatological problem.
