Pyoderma is a bacterial infection of the skin characterised by the formation of pus. The term covers a range of conditions, from superficial infections such as impetigo and folliculitis to deeper involvement producing boils, abscesses, and inflamed, pus-filled lesions. Most cases are caused by common skin bacteria, particularly species of Staphylococcus and Streptococcus, which invade the skin when its protective barrier is broken or when local or general defences are weakened.
