Overview
Breast cancer is a malignant disease arising from breast tissue, typically in the ducts or lobules, and is one of the most frequently diagnosed cancers in women, though it can also occur in men. In Family Medicine, the primary-care setting plays a central role in early detection, referral, risk counselling, and the long-term support of patients and survivors. Family physicians are often the first point of contact for breast symptoms and are well placed to promote screening, evaluate risk factors, coordinate diagnosis, and manage the physical and psychosocial consequences of treatment. Within this field the journal publishes peer-reviewed research on the management of post-mastectomy pain and on survival among breast cancer patients in tertiary cancer centres, alongside studies of risk factors associated with the disease. Additional work addresses the mental-health burden of breast cancer, cognitive-analytic and psycho-oncological care across cultural contexts, and the experience of immigrant women, as well as laboratory and clinical investigations into anticancer compounds, triple-negative breast cancer grading and lymph-node metastasis, chemokine-driven metastasis, and treatment after whole-brain radiotherapy. Together these topics reflect the breadth of primary-care involvement in breast cancer, from prevention and detection through to survivorship and supportive care.
