Overview
Blood circulation is the continuous movement of blood through the heart and blood vessels that delivers oxygen, nutrients, and hormones to the body's tissues and carries away carbon dioxide and metabolic waste. Driven by the pumping of the heart, the circulatory system comprises arteries that carry blood away from the heart, veins that return it, and capillaries where exchange with tissues takes place. Healthy circulation sustains every organ, supports immune defense by transporting white cells and antibodies, and maintains the balance of fluids and temperature throughout the body. For hematology and oncology, circulation is central because blood is both the medium studied and the route by which disease and therapy spread through the body. Disorders of the blood and its cells, the recruitment and migration of leukocytes during inflammation, and the delivery of oxygen to tissues all bear directly on how blood disorders and cancers develop and are treated. Hematology and Oncology Research publishes peer-reviewed, open-access work spanning blood physiology and pathology, including studies of leukocyte recruitment and migration and of tissue oxygenation and vascular function. This page gathers material relevant to blood circulation within the journal's wider focus on the biology and disorders of blood.
