Overview

The hematopoietic system is the network of tissues and processes responsible for producing the body's blood cells, centered on the bone marrow and supported by lymphoid organs. Through hematopoiesis, multipotent stem cells give rise to red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, replenishing them continuously and supporting oxygen transport, immune defense, and clotting. Disruption of this system underlies anemias, immune deficiencies, bleeding disorders, and blood cancers, making it central to hematology and to transplantation medicine. The articles gathered here relate to blood-cell production, hematopoietic and lymphoid cells, and their disorders and therapies. Mechanisms of impaired hematopoiesis feature in work on lineage-specific disruption of blood-cell production by a chemotherapeutic agent, including erythropoietin resistance and immune suppression. Stem-cell biology and transplantation are represented by studies of stem-cell mobilization, successful allogeneic transplantation across donor mismatch, and immune thrombocytopenia following transplantation. Cellular targeting and distribution appear in work on cholesterol-conjugated siRNA accumulating in hematopoietic and lymphoid cells, while marrow-related disease is examined through mast-cell populations in a xenotransplantation study and hypercoagulability in acute leukemia. Infectious complications and cardiovascular influences on the system are also considered. Together these contributions reflect the central concerns of hematopoietic research: understanding how blood cells are generated and regulated, how that production fails in disease and treatment, and how stem-cell and transplantation strategies can restore it.
