Overview

Non-clinical medicine and medical education refers to the domains of medicine and health-related teaching that lie outside direct patient diagnosis and treatment, encompassing the scientific, methodological, behavioural, and educational foundations that support healthcare research and practice. It includes the study and teaching of concepts and skills underpinning the understanding of human health and disease, as well as the training of health professionals and the integration of new tools and approaches into health services. Within Human Health Research, this field bridges the basic sciences, social and behavioural sciences, and applied health disciplines, and is concerned with how knowledge is generated, taught, and translated into improved care. Areas of inquiry include the development and evaluation of educational and training interventions for clinicians and care providers, such as digital platforms designed to build the skills of nurses and other staff, and the implementation of innovative or complementary services within health systems, for example the introduction of music therapy or other supportive approaches into routine care. Related work addresses the health needs of specific populations and care contexts, including refugees and their caregivers, quality-of-life assessment, and rehabilitation for critically ill patients. By focusing on education, methodology, service implementation, and the broader determinants of health rather than on individual clinical management alone, this field strengthens the capacity, quality, and evidence base of health research and professional practice.
