Overview

Physical activity is any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscle that results in energy expenditure, ranging from everyday occupational and household activity to structured exercise and sport. It is a major modifiable determinant of health, with regular activity associated with reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, metabolic disorders, and certain cancers, and with benefits for sleep, mental health, and functional capacity across the life course. Its study examines patterns and levels of activity in different populations, the physiological mechanisms through which movement confers benefit, and the behavioural and environmental factors that promote or impede an active lifestyle. Research in this area investigates the effects of physical activity on sleep in adolescents and adults, activity patterns in patients with chronic conditions such as thalassaemia and congenital heart disease, activity-based screening for ischaemic heart disease in people living with HIV, occupational activity levels in working populations, and barriers to activity and healthy eating among children and low-income families. Further strands address activity within culturally tailored lifestyle interventions to reduce cardiometabolic risk and the management of overweight and obesity. Physical activity matters because it is a low-cost, broadly accessible means of preventing disease and improving physical and mental well-being. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research on physical activity, exercise, and their relationships to health across populations.
