Mobile Genetic Elements

Mobile Genetic Elements (MGEs) are elements of genetic material (DNA) that are able to move from one organism to another. They are thought to contribute to the evolution of organisms by providing them with new genes and new opportunities to adapt and survive. MGEs are of particular importance because they can move between unrelated species, providing new genetic material at much faster speeds than traditional methods of genetic exchange like sexual reproduction. MGEs may also be used for biotechnological applications, such as gene therapy, for which the transfer of genetic material to a specific target organism is desired.
